Is COM (Component Object Modell) obsolet?

Hello all,

I have here a lot of code  written in VB 6. Most of the functionality is wrapped into COM Components or to be percisous in ActiveX dlls and controlls. I am a newbie to COM so I am not sure how it all works togother.

From now on all new code has to be written in vb.net and the old components have to be migrated one after another to vb.net. As I havent seen much of COM programming lately, I am wondering why. Is it because COM is actually obsolet? On google there are still tutorial for com programming that are from last 2-3 years. So it seams it is still supported.

We still Need component based programming or at least the possibility to reuse code. Normally i reuse code by createing a dll or a library Project that i include to my new Project. Is it the new way how to deal with reusability? What would be the best practice for reusing code? Should we still use COM? At the Moment we are working with Client based applications but in the futer we would like to use additionally for some functionality a web based Approach. Should we therefore use rather Services (WCF)?
